Thanksgiving backpacking in Missouri -- after chigger season, before mud season

Today’s Field Notes is about being outdoorsy in the Midwest.

It’s possible. Quite possible. It’s just not always easy — like it is here.

I started rock climbing and mountain biking when I lived in Missouri. It’s tough being a climber there, though, because the best nearby climbing is in southern Illinois, at Jackson Falls. Plus, the season is short.

You can be more consistent with mountain biking, and there’s good singletrack. In fact, the first time I bonked on a bike was riding the Berryman Trail, which IMBA named one of their epics. But it’s still not a year-round affair.

I’m glad to be here. It’s just easier to live the outdoor life in Boulder.
