In this week’s Field Notes, I’m watching a new route go up on the Diamond from the sidelines…and that’s as close as I want to get.

Boulder climbers Chris Weidner and Bruce Miller spent the end of July and most of August freeing a new route on Longs Peak’s Diamond. And since Chris is a friend, I got to hear all about it, every time they came back down.

They guys hauled 750 feet of rope up Longs. They worked it in rain, lightning, cold and wind. They usually left Boulder at 12:30 a.m. to put in 16 (or so) hour days exploring and cleaning the route.

Nine days of that. I think it qualifies as a shit-ton of work. Congrats, guys. I hope someday I can follow it.
