In today’s Field Notes, my friend Dan takes my fly fishing for the first time, and I try to decide if I’m OK with fish suffering.
I like to eat fish. I don’t like to see fish suffering. I have a feeling I’m a hypocrite.
But I’m not sure yet. I caught two fish on our little adventure, and both were a native species, so I didn’t have the option to keep them. Next time, I might. It’s possible I have the guts to gut a fish. Or maybe I’ll have to acquire the guts to admit that I’d prefer to keep buying the fish I eat at Whole Foods. Either way, it seems fishing and guts go hand in hand.
