Behind the scenes on Trail Ridge Road

Yesterday I attended Rocky Mountain National Park‘s annual media day for the plowing of Trail Ridge Road.

It was super cool to go up there while the road is still closed, stop in the middle of the road to check out the drifts, and of course, see the road crew at work up close…and get to talk with them.

My story, or rather the backstory, on how the road is plowed every year is here.

Within the mere hours the media convoy was out on the road, conditions went from sunny and 50 degrees to windy, snowing and 28 degrees. It’s easy to see why it takes an average of 42 days to clear the road enough to open it every year.

They’re hoping to have it open to the public on Friday.
